What I Miss About Then, Part 1

| Comments (7)

Back then we were so full of potential. It seemed like us and everyone we knew were only stopping off for a quick drink on our way to greatness.

We drank a lot back then, but, like every other small pain in our path, the hangovers seemed energizing rather than debilitating. The queasy days seemed a small price to pay for the wisdom we were gaining, the experiences we were having, the friendships we were building.

And the friends we made seemed certain to be with us for the rest of our lives, to stand as rocks in the times of our sorrow and whoop and holler with us in joyous reverie when that was called for. Things moved so fast then.

The laundry stayed in growing piles in the dirty corners of our rooms and got infrequently washed on lengthy excursions to the laundromat that was next to the bar. Between dates with the laundry, clothes were selected not on the basis of color or fashion, but on the results of the 'sniff' test.

We could - and did - live on porches in the summertime, waking and standing up in the mornings to scratch our asses, naked, much to the dismay of our suburban neighbors. Every day was filled with terror of unstructured freetime, because we were either unemployed or on break from school or both.

I sure do miss those days.

Or maybe I'm just viewing them through the pleasant, hazy gauze of the distant past.

It was great, especially the staying up talking and drinking and then realizing it was dawn and the world was quiet and new.

But I vaguely remember often being maudlin, or was it morose? And many times in your company too. Seemingly fearing that maybe that perfect girl, or great job was forever lost or out of reach.

But mostly I remember at times laughing so hard I thought I'd keel over dead...

Oh, belive me, sir, all of that perfection is - and always was - WAY out of reach.

On the other hand, I kinda like my current imperfect life. All that perfection would probably have killed me, and you, too.

I'm happy with my life, too. At least we learn that things will change or we can change them ourselves( ie. my new job) and we learn to be more accepting. Or at least I hope I have.

I guess that's why it would be fun to go back to those halcyon years knowing what I know now. Who knows, perhaps if young Jeremy and Dane were to ever meet old Jeremy and Dane, it just might be the old guys who kick the crap out of *them*! At least if we fed them enough beer and got them all maudlin first so that they wouldn't see the blows coming!

Yeah, I think we have been learning. That whole thing about 'with age, comes wisdom' thing turns out to be true. Who would have guessed?

And yes, if we met the Jeremy and Dane from the past, we could probal beat the tar out of them, through the dirty tricks we've learned, if nothing else.

You know what else I miss? Not having to pay as much attention to my personal hygiene. Or maybe not. Who can tell?

Oh, and by the way, about your job, Lynn says 'Congratulations' but also says it's not as cool as being the Mayor of Pretend City.

Hi Jeremy ...

Your post is certainly appropriate for the comment that I need to post here. I am also missing an old friend and the old days and you may be able to help me find her again :).

I know you don't know me but we share a friend in common. I met Sulky (aka) Sulkbrarian, who is a budding Librarian in the Milwaukee WI area, on tBlog years ago and lost touch with her. After doing a search of her online name I found her Blogger blog that she only posted to once in February 2005 and on that blog she had you listed as a friend and mentioned you in her one post there so I thought this would be my best chance of finding her again in this cyber-abyss.

I appologize for posting this in the comments section of your blog but I didn't see an email address for you listed on your blog. I hope this doesn't seem "stalkerish" of me but since I know that Sulky was very devoted to blogging on a regular basis, not seeing her online over the last couple of years has got me worried about her. I know she may just have changed the online name that she is using so it could be as simple as that but I would be heartbroken if something would have happend to her if that isn't the case.

She knew me as WelshMoonSpirit on tBlog. I was wondering if you do still have contact with her if you would be so kind as to pass my email address on to her so that she could email me if she would like to ... and if you could just simply let me know if you know that she is happy and healthy. That would be enough to calm my fears though I would love to get to chat with her again. My email is kihakudadeni@yahoo.com

Thank you for taking the time to read my message and I truly appreciate any help that you can offer. And I truly appologize if I have bothered you in any way. Best Wishes!

Hey Gwen!

I have forwarded your email to Sulky. I think it's safe to say that she's happy and healthy, but beyond that I'll let her declare.

No apologies necessary, by the way!

J.

Thanks for forwarding my info on to Sulky :)

And thanks for letting me know that she is doing well ... she was such a great friend to me back in my tBlog days and I would love to have the chance to catch up with her. But I haven't heard back from her so I hope you wouldn't mind saying another hello to her from me and let her know that I hope she has found her dream librarian job finally. Thanks again for your help :)

I am becoming a fan of your blog also :)

Best Wishes to you and yours!
