This is the album Nirvana and Pearl Jam only wish they could have made: intelligent, clamorous, and hashing out more torment and passion in four sides than all the grungers and headbangers since -- all without a hint of heavy-metal pretension.

That means the 20th anniversary of "Double Nickels" isn't far behind.

"New Day Rising" is my favorite Husker's album but "Zen Arcade" has some great songs on it like "Pink Turns To Blue" and "Something I Learned Today." It's funny, though, that through the evolution of the band--no matter how much studio time or money they had--every album sounded like "Zen Arcade."

Only a fww months, yes. And I respectfully submit that "Candy Apple Gray" sounded NOTHING like other Huskers records. Which was a problem.

You've read the Azerrad book, right?

I have read the book and loved it. It's (in my opinion) the best book written about "underground" rock. Wonderfully written.

I'll have to pull out "Candy Apple Grey" and give it a spin (honestly I can't even remember what songs are on that platter--"Makes No Sense At All?"). The one Husker's album I don't have is the last one.

Do you think there'll be any anniversary articles about "Nickels"?

'Make No Sense At All' was on "Flip Your Wig".

I think the 'hit' on "Candy Apple Gray" was 'Sorry Somehow'.

Sadly, I suspect that the only articles on "Nickels" will be the ones we write ourselves.

yes. "sorry somehow". "candy apple grey" also features my favorite sit-on-yer-ass-and-sulk toon, "too far down". zoloft, boys? :)

sigh.

For those of you who are interested, the bassist, Greg Norton, has opened a restaurant on the Wisconsin side of the river, just outside Red Wing, Minnesota. Go across the high bridge, head toward Bay City, and look for signs for The Nortons restaurant - it's right near the airport.

Fantastic food. Try the elk tenderloin. Expensive, but worth it. I'm proud to say that the man taught me how to cook.
