Truth In Music - Steve Albini Interview

H: But when you were in Big Black or Rapeman, many other bands were taking sides politically, but you never had a "Screw Reagan" song or anything like that.

A: We assumed that amongst our audience, there wouldn't be a lot of sympathy for the mainstream right-wing in American politics, and we didn't see the need to remind people of what they already thought. I think that's a weakness of a lot of overtly political music. It spends a lot of time reaffirming the starting point for the discussion rather than participating in an actual discussion. Telling people what is or isn't good, or providing affirmation for the direction they may already be going was more important than expressing something that was unique to the person who was writing the material.
