RIP, Bob Kames

Kames was 'Chicken Dance' king

If Bob Kames wasn't Milwaukee's own music man, it wasn't for lack of trying.

Bob Kames performed "The Chicken Dance" at a University of Wisconsin football game in 1983. "We rolled out an organ at the 50-yard line at Camp Randall," said his son, Bob Kames Jr. "And ever since then, they play 'The Chicken Dance' at the games. You get 80,000 people and they all do it."

Kames was, after all, the man credited with the modern-day version of "Dance Little Bird," better known as "The Chicken Dance."

==========

Kames once made a demo tape of a "Dance Little Bird" version with singer Tiny Tim. That bird didn't fly. "It just wasn't a song for Tiny Tim, for that crazy voice," Kames said.
When his "Dance Little Bird" came out in Soviet-controlled Poland in 1983, it was a solid gold hit."I get 2 cents out from each 35-cent record sold," he said. "When they sold 300,000 records, they gave me a gold record. Of course, I can't take the money out of the country." Kames established a relief fund with his Polish royalties.
